Gokyo Porter Shelter (Nepal) – the latest project

CAN has negotiated with lodge owners, KBZ and the National Park, and all parties agree to proceed.

Dr Jim Duff visited Gokyo village in October 2009 and spoke to all the lodge owners to discuss adding a rescue post room, an outpost of the Machermo rescue post, to the shelter and to choose an appropriate site. The lodge owners agreed to the rescue room and site and CAN has been asked to prepare plans and costings.

It is hoped to staff the rescue side of the operation in pre monsoon 2010, the doctor staying in a lodge, and start stone breaking in August 2010.

Donations are sought for this project which is expected to cost in the region of US$90,000.

Gorak Shep Porter Shelter (Nepal)

The magnificent GorakShep porter shelter below KalaPattar (one of the best Everest viewpoint) is now open thanks to the efforts of CAN (Community Action Nepal) and project manager Ian Wall and his team.

This shelter provides a pressing need for a quality shelter at an extreme altitude of 5184m (17000 feet) and is overseen by the local lodge owner. Already it has been well used:

Autumn 2008 season: 1258 bed nights.

Spring 2009 season: 1055 bed nights

A large donation to this project was made by IPPG (see accounts).

Machermo Porter Shelter and Rescue Post (Nepal)

The porter shelter and rescue post is now maturing and there is a good level of porter occupation. Next season (spring 2010) rice, dal and tea will be sold at cost price to porters as they often arrive with nothing to eat.

The present sunroom at the post has become too small to accommodate the large crowds of trekkers attending the popular porter talk and altitude lecture so it has been decided to build a large sunroom for day use and the talks. The old sunroom will relieve the pressure on doctors accommodation and provide a warmer place for overnight stays by patients.

CAN have been approached to take on this project and donations are sought for the building costs.
